THE COMMONTONE: A Practical Guide to Improvisation

A common tone is simply a note that stays the same throughout a chord progression. Common tones, just like guide tone lines, are a very useful concept for writing melodies, voicing harmonies or improvising.

If you already have a chord progression, simply look for notes that are present in every chord (“common” to every chord). Sometimes you might have to add chord options to make this work.
